Our old dog Ziggy had a lot of...erm....digestive issues, so Chad and I decided to make his food ourselves.
The main ingredients of a basic dog food include: a meat, a starch, some veggies.
We also fed Ziggy dry dog food in addition to this homemade dog food because the crunchy food helps clean a dog's teeth.
Here's a list of foods dogs should avoid:
3. Grapes and raisins
4. Macadamia Nuts
6. Citrus Oil
7. Baby Food

How to Make Homemade Dog Food
*Peel some potatoes. (Potato skin is toxic to dogs! Peel thoroughly!) Cut them up into bite sized pieces and boil. This is the starch component.
*Cook/Boil the meat (we used local organic ground turkey) on high heat. Keep adding water to keep the meat moist. After cooking, strain the meat and rinse off the fat.
*Add veggies: we used peas and pureed pumpkin. Pumpkin is the only thing that stopped Ziggy from having diarrhea.
*Mix everything together. Put half in the fridge for up to 4 days and freeze the rest.
*Optional: soak some acidophilis (the friendly bacteria found in yogurt) tablets in water until they dissolve. Pour this into the mixture.
Ziggy lived to be 16, probably because he ate better than most people! He ate this food for about 4 years until he got tired of it.
